Any industry dealing with or affecting the natural environment.

Before the commencement of any activity which relates to the environment, such an activity or undertaking must be registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and an environment permit issued. Activities such as mining, construction, logging, and oil marketing which have the potential of adversely affecting the environment must first go through an Environmental Impact Assessment, leading to the production of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) which determines whether the activity is allowed to go ahead.

This legislation establishes that any entity seeking to engage in mineral processing and mining operations must receive a license before commencement of such activities. Financial institutions must ensure that their clients are able to produce one of these licenses before investing in their operations.

License holders must also produce environmental permits before they are able to commence mining activities.

This Act set a target for a 10% renewable electricity share by 2020. The Renewable Energy Master Plan, released in 2019, moved this target to 2030 and sets a goal of increasing the share of renewable energy in the grid from 42.5 MW in 2015 to 1363.63 MW by 2030.

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) Act empowers the implementing body, CHRAJ, to ensure that the fundamental human rights and freedoms of persons in Ghana are protected irrespective of colour, tribe, nationality, and other protected characteristics.
