Venezuela held presidential elections on 28 July 2024.

According to Venezuela’s electoral authority, the National Electoral Council, incumbent President Nicolas Maduro of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) won the election with 51% of the vote. He will serve a third six-year term.

Opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) received 44% of the vote. 

The opposition party’s leader María Corina Machado had been barred from running for office.

Members of the unicameral National Assembly serve five-year terms, the ruling party has 219 of 277 seats.

The largest opposition grouping, Plataforma Unitaria (PU), includes Cuentas Claras (CC), Fuerza Liberal (FL), Movimiento Izquierda Democrática (MID), Movimiento Progresista de Venezuela (MPV), Movimiento Venezuela Responsable, Sostenible y Emprendedora (Moverse), Primero Justicia (PJ), Progreso Social (PS), Proyecto Venezuela (PV), Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT), Unidos para Venezuela (UPV) and Voluntad Popular (VP). The second-largest grouping is Vamos, which also includes several parties.

Venezuela has a population of 29.3 million and around 20.7 million registered voters. In the 2024 election, voter turnout was 59%. In the last parliamentary election in 2020, voter turnout was 30.4%.
