Taiwan held a general election on 13 January 2024 to elect the next president and members of the Legislative Yuan. 

Voters elected Lai Ching-te of the ruling  Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as its next president. Since 2020, Lai served as vice-president to President Tsai Ing-wen. Presidents serve four-year terms.

Lai beat Hou You-yi of the Kuomintang (KMT) party and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) candidate Ko Wen-j.

The Legislative Yuan (parliament) has 113 seats and members serve a four-year terms.

The DPP lost its legislative majority to the KMT and the TPP in the election.

The main political parties are the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP); Kuomintang (KMT); and Taiwan People's Party (TPP).

Taiwan has a population of 23.9 million and around19.5 million registered voters. Turnout in the 2024 election was 71.7%.
