Mozambique will be holding a general election on 9 October 2024.
The ruling Mozambique Liberation Front party (Frelimo) named Daniel Chapo as its presidential candidate in the upcoming election, who succeeds outgoing President Filipe Nyusi.
The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) selected its leader Lutero Simango to be its candidate.
The president is the head of state and head of government and is elected for a five-year term, serving a maximum of two terms. They are elected by absolute majority vote through a two-round system. The prime minister is appointed by the president. The current prime minister is Adriano Afonso Maleiane.
The country’s Assembly of the Republic has 250 members, elected for a five-year term by proportional representation.
The main political parties are Frelimo, MDM and Renamo.
Mozambique has a population of 34.7 million and approximately 12.6 million registered voters. In the 2019 parliamentary elections, voter turnout was 51.4% and in the presidential election is was 51.8%.
