Moldova is due to hold presidential elections on 20 October 2024.
It is expected that President Maia Sandu will be running for a second four-year term in the election. She is the founder and former leader of the Party of Action and Solidarity and a former Prime Minister of Moldova.
The country’s parliament is a unicameral assembly with 101 members, allocated by proportional representation of party lists in a single national constituency.
The current Prime Minister is Dorin Recean of the Party of Action and Solidarity.
The main political parties are the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS); Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS), an alliance comprising the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) and the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM); National Alternative Movement (MAN).
Moldova has a population of 3.34 million and approximately 3 million registered voters. Turnout in the 2020 presidential elections was 58.2%; in the 2021 parliamentary elections it was 48.5%.
