India held a general election between 19 April to 1 June 2024 to elect a prime minister and members of parliament.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a third consecutive five-year term after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition, which he leads, won 293 parliamentary seats in the lower house Lok Sabha.

The main opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) coalition, led by Rahul Gandhi of the Indian National Congress party, won 234 seats.

The country has a bicameral parliament with the Lok Sabha which has 543 directly elected members and the upper house Rajya Sabha with 245 members. A party needs more than 272 seats in Lok Sabha in order govern.

India has a population of 1.44 billion and approximately 969 million registered voters. Turnout in the 2024 election was 66%.
